Mr Politician – Silas Aduma (Song review)

Mr Politician Free Download

Mr. Politician is a song by Nigerian Gospel music singer and songwriter, Silas Aduma. He originally  released the song on the 4th of November, 2018. The song has a total play time of 255 seconds (4 minutes 15 seconds) and can be classified under the genre of Christian Contemporary Music.

General Overview:

Mr Politician is the kind of song that gets you to sit and reflect on the lyrics. The song is basically a wake-up call to politicians (and everyone in general), that political positions are not for amassing wealth for the leaders and their families. Rather, those in political offices should use those positions to seek ways to improve the lives of the people.

Strong Points:

  • Relevant message. This is the strongest point of this song. Mr Politican’s  message to both politicians in power and aspirants of the various political offices isvery relevant. The message of the song is clear and easy to understand. Silas Aduma did well in using simple words to convey his message in Mr Politician.
  • Beautiful song composition. Another strong point of Mr Politician by Silas Aduma is how well the song was composed. The melody of the song is beautiful. The choice of the chords used was soothing for the message of the song and absolutely commendable. There were dynamics throughout the song; the melody change from verse to chorus was beautiful. I especially enjoyed the complete change in the chords at the bridge.
  • Good Production. The production of the song was also beautifully done. I commend the choice of instruments used by the producer. The slight use of strings added to the emotions of the strong. The creativity of the producer in creating dynamics between the verses and the chorus, despite having the same chord progression is also commendable.
  • Great backing vocals. The backing vocals did a great job.

What could have been improved:

  • Mr Politician would have been much better if Silas Aduma had featured someone else to do the second verse, as well as the adlips in the chorus and the bridge.

Conclusion

Mr Politician by Silas Aduma is a beautiful song. I enjoyed listening to it. On a scale of 1-10, I would rate the song 7/10. You can listen to the song for yourself on Soundcloud or download it free on Jeplune Music.   You can also watch the lyrics video for the song on YouTube.

Melody Album – Frank Edwards (Music review)

Melody album - Frank Edwards

Melody is the eight studio album of Nigerian Gospel Music icon, Frank Edwards. It was released on the 29th of April, 2022. The album has 10 tracks with a total play time of 3,025 seconds (50 minutes 25 seconds). It is difficult to assign Melody album to a particular genre of music because the songs are of different genres. Some of the genres you’ll find include, Afrobeats, traditional gospel, contemporary worship, even 80’s punk.

General Overview:

Melody album by Frank Edwards is basically a collection of songs that ascribe praise and worship to God for who He is and what He’s done. Like I said earlier, the songs have different genres. And the moods of the songs differ. Some of the songs are calm reflective songs, while others are groovy kind of songs that would get you dancing. However, all the songs are easy to sing along.

Overview of the tracks:

  1. ‘Imela’ ft Sinach is a song of praise and appreciation to God for His goodness and love.
  2. ‘Unchangeable God’ is a song of worship that acknowledges God as One who can never change.
  3. ‘Hallelujah Still’ ft. Nathaniel Bassey is another song of worship. Hallelujah, the sound of heaven is sung throughout the song.
  4. ‘The One For Me’ is a song of love to Christ. This is basically a response of Christ’s great love for us.
  5. ‘Buru Hallelujah’ is a song of praise to God; singing Hallelujah to God.
  6. ‘Another One’ is a song that praises God for the great things he has been doing. The song acknowledges that whenever we share testimonies of God’s goodness, He does more.
  7. ‘Victorious’ is a groovy song that talks of the fact we are victorious in life because of what Christ did for us (on the cross). The song has this 80’s punk kind of feel.
  8. ‘Onye Eze’ is a beautiful song. As a matter of fact, I would say it’s the best song in the album. The song acknowledges the Holy spirit as the Boss and Leader. The one who leads believers through life here on earth, and whom we ought to follow.
  9. ‘I Cast My Crown’ ft Don Moen is a song of worship to God. The phrase, “anyi na-asi gi I di mma” was repeated several times. And it translates “we testify that You are good”.
  10. ‘Melody’ is a danceable song of praise and gratitude to God. The praises, according to the song, is from a heart of joy.

Strongest points:

  • Great production. This is the strongest point of Melody album. All the tracks in the album are very skillfully and professionally produced. The choice of instruments for the various songs was perfect.
  • Awesome mixing and mastering. This is next to the production of the tracks. The mixing and mastering of the tracks in Melody album were top notch.
  • Great melody/ composing. Another strong point of this album is the melody of the songs. All the songs were composed with beautiful melodies.
  • The Artists featured in tracks 9, 10, and 11 were good. They all ‘know their onions’ and that added spice to the songs in which they were featured.
  • Great backing singers. Not all the songs had backing singers in the album. But the ones that did were beautiful. The backing singers were exceptionally good.

What could have been improved:

  • Honestly, I believe Melody album would have been much better if Frank Edwards had worked with a lyricist in writing the songs. There is no argument about the fact that he is a great composer (the songs already prove that). But most of the songs were filled with common words/ phrases from other popular Nigerian Gospel music. Some of these words/phrases have almost turned to clichés in Nigerian Gospel music industry. And to be honest, their constant repetition is beginning to be a bit of a ‘turn-off’ for people who have good taste in music. So, for subsequent releases, I would suggest he works with a lyricist. He can come up with the basic ideas for the songs and the melodies, but let a professional lyricist help him with the lyrics of the songs.
  • I don’t know if it was done intentionally, but personally, I feel some of the songs in Melody album were too long.

Conclusion:

Melody album by Frank Edwards is a beautiful album. I particularly enjoyed ‘Onye Eze’ more than the rest of the tracks. On a scale of 1 -10, I would rate this album a 7/10.

You can listen to the album yourself on Deezer or Boomplay.

A song for people in pain; After the Rain – Skiffy (song review)

Skiffy- after the rain

After the Rain is a single by Skiffy. It was released on the 15th of May, 2020. The song has a total play time of 303 seconds (5 minutes 3 seconds). The genre of the music is a blend of Afro- Cuban music and Contemporary Christian Music.

General overview:

After The Rain is a calm, reflective song, though it also has the tendency to get you tapping your feet to the rhythm unconsciously as the song plays. The lyrics of the song and the melody are aimed at encouraging people who are downcast or feeling overwhelmed with life’s problems and giving them hope.

Strong points:

  • Great lyrical content. This is the strongest point of this song. After the rain is worded with deep, meaningful and relevant message. The message of the song is basically that tough times do not last forever and so anyone going through difficulties in life should hold on, have faith, and not give up because after the rain comes the rainbow. The lyrics of the song was also beautifully arranged such that it was pleasing to the ear.
  • Great Melody and composition. This is another strong point of this song. The melody of After the rain is beautiful and soothing, especially considering the audience the song was written for. The choice of chords was carefully done such that it just portrays the message of hope that the song is about. Also, there was dynamics in the composition of the song which makes it very interesting. Generally, the songwriting of this song was highly professional and beautiful.
  • Great vocal delivery. Skiffy did a great job with the vocals. Her voice depicted the message of the song completely as she sang. There was empathy in her voice as she sang the verses and yet you could hear hope in her voice as you listen to the chorus. I could say she is indeed a very talented singer.

 What could have been improved:

  • It seemed as though the song lacked body, maybe because Skiffy naturally has a ‘high- pitched’ voice. It would have been nice if some of the instruments were EQed in such a way that they would have some more weight at the low-mid or bass frequencies so as to balance the high frequency of Skiffy’s voice.

Conclusion:

After the rain is a beautiful song skillfully written and professionally delivered. I enjoyed listening to it (I still do). On a scale of 1 – 10, I would score the song a 9/10.

Overcometh EP – Destiny Jesuu (Music Review)

Overcometh EP - Destiny Jesuu

Overcometh EP is the debut EP of talented Nigerian Christian Contemporary Music singer, Destiny Jesuu. It was released on the 31st of March, 2021. There are 5 tracks in the EP, with a total play time of 1510 seconds (25 minutes 10 seconds). The genre of all the tracks in Overcometh EP is Urban Contemporay Gospel, except for the second track.

General Overview

Overcometh EP contains deeply emotional and reflective songs. These songs would be quite suitable to played while meditating, praying or worshipping. They can also be sang in church during the ‘praise/ worship’ sessions. Here’s a brief track by track description:

  1. Oil of Gladness is a song of proclamation/ prophecy of the great signs/ manifestations that God will do through believers in these last days.
  2. Come And See ft. Neken Chuwang is a song of testimony of what has done and what He is doing.
  3. In Your Presence is a song of worship that talks of the many spiritual benefits of dwelling in God’s presence.
  4. Blindfolded is a song of total surrender and complete trust in God’s leading, no matter the pain and fear.
  5. Revelation 5 is a song of worship to Jesus Christ, inspired by Revelations 5.

Strong Points

  • Great vocal delivery. In all honesty, Destiny Jesuu’s vocal delivery is the strongest point of the Overcometh EP. It’s undeniable that she has a beautiful voice, but the way she maximized the use of her voice in all the songs was amazing. You would literally feel goose bumps as you listen to her sing in this EP.
  • Great production. This is the second strongest point of this EP. I must commend TheMystic for a job well done. The production of the songs were perfect. The choice of instruments, the arrangement, the vocal processing of Destiny Jesuu’s vocals, everything was just perfect for this EP.
  • Beautiful Melody. All the songs in Overcometh EP had beautiful melody. Yes, the production helped bring out the beauty of the melodies, but basically, the song were composed with very beautiful melodies. You will still enjoy those songs even if they were sang with just one melodic instrument to accompany the vocals.
  • Strong Bibllical Messages. Another strong point of this EP is that all the songs had strong Biblical messages. Even though most of the song did not have much lyrics in them, yet the messages were clear and Biblical.

What could have been improved

Honestly, the only I felt was not properly done was the promotion. I strongly believe this EP did not get as much publicity as it deserves.

Conclusion

Overcometh EP is a collection of great spiritual as well as beautiful songs. I have enjoyed the songs in the EP over and over again. My favourite track is ‘In Your Presence’. On scale of 1 – 10, I will give this EP a 10. Yes, it totally deserves that. You can stream/ download the songs in Overcometh EP using this link.

Running After You (song review)

Running after you

‘Running After You’ is a single by Onoji Kalebson featuring Grace Emmanuel. It was released on the 4th of March, 2022. The song has a total play time of 316 seconds (5 minutes 16 seconds). The genre of the song is Nigerian Highlife music with a dash of contemporary worship music.

General overview:

‘Running After You’ is a song of love and commitment to God in response to the great love He has shown to us.  Its classy ‘Highlife’ feel makes it suitable to be played at ceremonies like wedding receptions, etc as it can easily be danced to by everyone, especially the elderly.

Strong points:

  • Great production. This is the strongest point of this song. The choice and use of instruments were perfect for the song. There were lots of bright sounding instruments which gave the song a happy feel, rather than a sad one. The slow tempo of the song gave it that elegant, high class feel. The production was just skillfully and beautifully done.
  • Beautiful melody. The song also has a beautiful melody which goes very well with the message of the song.
  • The featured artist, Grace Emmanuel did very well with her verse. She added spice to the song in a very beautiful way.
  • The backing vocals were professional.
  • The song’s theme/ message is quite relevant. It was more of a commitment to God from Onoji Kalebson that no matter what happens, his heart will still be running after Him.

What could have been improved:

  •  Considering the message of the song, I expected that one of the verses would talk about the unconditional love of God and why the writer has made up his mind to keep running after God. We know from scriptures that we love Him because He first loved us. I guess Onoji Kalebson assumed that everyone who would listen to this song already knew this truth, but that’s usually not the case.
  • I felt that Onoji Kalebson would have done better with his vocal delivery. The song is a commitment (born out of deep affection) to God in response to God’s love. But I didn’t hear that deep affection in his voice.  It seemed like he was too conscious of how his voice would sound, that it lacked passion.

Conclusion:

‘Running After You’ is a beautiful song with a beautiful production. I enjoyed listening to it. On a scale of 10, I would rate this song 7/10.

You can listen to the song  or download it for yourself here.

Glory to Glory – Manji Spice (song review)

Glory to Glory

Glory to Glory is a single by singer and songwriter, Manji Spice featuring Degeneral. It was released on the 9th of January, 2022. The total play time of the song is 224 seconds (3 minutes 44 seconds). The genre of the song is a mixture of funk and Christian Hippop.

General Overview:

Glory to Glory is the kind of song that would get you nodding your head to the rhythm or maybe even on your feet and jumping if you’re in the right mood. It’s a song of excitement about Christ and what He has done. It would also make an excellent Christmas song.

Strong points:

  • Great vocal delivery. Manji Spice did a great job with his vocal delivery of the song. Asides the fact that he has a very sweet voice, he used it in way that correctly passes the message of the song.
  • Relevant message. The song also has very relevant and Biblically accurate message. Simply put, the song reminds the believer that Christ is the reason their lives move from one level of glory to another. Like Scripture says, “the path of the righteous is like a shinning light that shines brighter and brighter unto the perfect day.” Also, it reminds believers that Christian celebrations like Christmas are basically about Christ not about the feasting.
  • Beautiful melody. The song has a beautiful chord progression. Even if the song were sang with just a guitar, it would still be very pleasing to the ears.

What could have been improved:

  • The intro of the song was not quite fitting. The song is an exciting the song and so an exciting intro to the song would have been much better than the one it had. The intro of the song made it look like it was a sad reflective song when it is the exact opposite.
  • The tempo of the song was slow. Considering that the song is an exciting song, a much faster tempo would have been better.

Conclusion:

Glory to Glory is a beautiful song. I enjoyed the song. On a scale of 10, I would rate the song a 7/10. You can download the song here or listen to it on Audiomack here.

Confession by Cypzy featuring AlphaBaze (Song Review)

Confession by Cypzy ft. AlphaBaze

This review is for Confession by Cypzy featuring AlphaBaze. It was released on the 26th day of January, 2022. The song has a total play time of 208 seconds (3 minutes 28 seconds). The genre of the song is Christian Hip hop.

General overview:

Confession is a song to get you to sit and reflect on the lyrics. People who struggle with their identity and accepting that they’ve been forgiven would definitely relate to the lyrics of the song. It is not the kind of song you can dance to.

Strong points:

  • Great vocal delivery. One of the strongest points of this song is the vocal delivery of Cypzy and AlphaBaze. Cypzy’s delivery of his confession in the verses was on point; you could hear the emotion in his voice and that’s very commendable. AlphaBaze really took the song to a whole new level with the hook and the chorus. I completely fell in love with the song when I heard the chorus after the second verse.
  • Great production. Next to the vocal delivery is the production of the song. It very skillfully done. The producer’s choice of instruments was very good. The manner in which the tension of the song gradually rose from just one keyboard (in verse one) to full instrumentation (in the chorus) was also apt. I really love the production of this song.
  • Relevant message. The song is basically a confession of someone who had derailed in the past, but who is trying to retrace his steps back to God. People struggle to accept the fact that he is truly repentant, but he knows he’s been forgiven by God. Like I mentioned in the general overview, people who, like the prodigal son, has lost their way and people who struggle with accepting that God has forgiven them of their past would definitely relate to the lyrics of this song.

What could have been improved:

It would have been nice if the song had a third verse or bridge after the hook and in that verse talk clearly about God’s forgiveness and the truth that there is no sinful past that God can’t forgive. That would have helped drive home the message of the song.

Conclusion:

Confession by Cypzy featuring AlphaBaze is a beautiful song. I enjoyed listening to it. On a scale of 1- 10, I will score it 9/10.

Heart Of A Soldier by Kazi (Song Review)

Heart of a Soldier

This review is for Heart Of A Soldier by Christian rapper and Pastor, Kazi. The song was released on the 29th of October, 2021. It has a total play time of 220 seconds (3 minutes 40 seconds). The genre of the song is Christian Hip hop.

General overview:

Heart of a soldier is the kind of the song that would easily get your attention once it starts playing. It has this bold and “in your face” kind of feel. If you’re a hip hop head, then you’ll most likely fall in love with the song. The tempo is fast enough for someone to be able to dance to it.

Strong points:

  • Relevant message. Being a pastor, Kazi passes across deep scriptural truths, as usual, using this song. The song reminds believers that they are Soldiers of Christ here on earth and this has two implications; (1) they cannot afford to live like ordinary men without purpose (2) they have what it takes to wrestle with and resist the forces of darkness.
  • Awesome production. Another strong point of this song is the production. It’s bold, daring and beautiful. The production helped to pass the message of the song. I particularly loved the energy of the 808s and how they were beautifully used in the song. The mix was also very good. It’s not easy to have very loud 808s and still maintain a clear mix. I really must commend whoever mixed this song.
  • Great vocal delivery. The boldness with which Kazi passed across the message of the song was on point. Considering that the song dares believers to fight the good fight of faith, it was necessary that the vocal delivery be strong and Kazi did justice to that.

What could have been improved:

There was no dynamics in the song. The entire was made up of two chords and that progression was repeated from beginning to the end. Though the song was not boring because the message was relevant and enriching, yet I wish there was a little change (maybe in the chords or something) at some point in the song to create dynamics.

Conclusion:

Heart of a soldier by Kazi is a beautiful song with a relevant message. I loved the creativity in adding a native language (Igbo) to the rap verses. And I really love the production. On a scale of 1-10, I would score this song 9/10. You can download the song here or watch the lyric video here.

“Oh yah yah yah” by Lawrence Ibrahim ft. Zack Silva & Degeneral (Song review)

"Oh yah yah yah" by Lawrence Ibrahim

This review is for a song titled “Oh yah yah yah” by Lawrence Ibrahim featuring multi-talented rapper and poet, Degeneral and Zack Silva. The song was released on the 23rd of January, 2022. It has a total play time of 223 seconds (3 minutes 23 seconds). The genre of the song is Christian Hip pop.

General overview:

“Oh yah yah yah” is a song of praise to God. Though it’s not the kind of song you can dance to because the tempo is slow, but it will definitely get you nodding your head. It gives you that feel of victory, hope, and excitement, especially if you are a Christian. Personally, I think it would be perfect as theme music or end credits for Christian movie with a message of victory for the believer.

Strong points:

  • Beautiful melody. The melody of this song is it’s strongest point. I could play this song over and over and not get tired of listening to it. It’s just so beautiful. I love it. (Don’t blame me, I’m a composer).
  • Great production. Next to the melody of the song, the production is the second strongest point of the song. The choice of instruments were creative. If the wrong instruments were used for this melody, it would have ended up sounding very emotional and moody, but the producer’s choice was really creative. Also, I love the way the tension in the song builds up gradually, and consistently, from the intro to the second chorus. It created dynamics in the song. It also gives the impression of moving from a tough situation to victory at last (which is why I will totally recommend this song for a movie’s theme music). I must commend the producer of this song.
  • Relevant message. The message of the song is simple, yet relevant; God alone is worthy of praise. And our experiences or the struggles we go through personally does not change that truth.
  • The artists featured, Zack Silva and Degeneral added their own spice to the song in a beautiful way.
  • Excellent vocal delivery. Everyone on this track, Lawrence Ibrahim, Zack Silva and Degeneral did a great job with their vocal delivery.

What could have been improved:

  • The song title did not do justice to the message of the song at all. Honestly, the only reason I decided to listen to the song in the first place was because I knew one of the artists personally. It was only when I listened that I realized the song was more than the title. I feel a better and more appealing title should have given to the song. The title doesn’t even have to be a line in the song.
  • I didn’t quite like the way Degeneral’s verse ended. I appreciate the creativity in sharing what looked like an honest confession of someone struggling to see reasons to praise God, but I wish he ended the verse on a positive note (that God still deserves praise despite his experiences).

Conclusion:

“Oh yah yah yah” by Lawrence Ibrahim is a beautiful song. I love it. I had played it repeatedly for more than 3hrs before I decided to review it and I enjoyed listening to it. On a scale of 1 to 10, I will give this song an 8/10. You can download the song here. You can also read other song reviews I’ve done here.

N’Obi by Miracle Paul (song Review)

N'Obi by Miracle Paul

This song review is for “N’obi” by Nigerian Gospel artist, Miracle Paul. Miracle Paul was signed under the same record label as popular Gospel musician, Ada Ehi last year. “N’obi” is an Igbo expression which literally translates “in my heart” in English. The song was released on the 29 th of October, 2021. It has has a total play time of 210 seconds (3 minutes 30 seconds). The genre of the song is a blend of Afro pop and Contemporary Christian Music.

General Overview:

N’obi is a love song to God. It redirects the mind of the listeners (especially Christian believers) to the truth that Christ is not only their Lord, but also their lover. It’s not the the kind of song to dance to, rather it’s a song you sit back and enjoy. Due to the fact that it is calm and non-distracting, it would really do well as background music in any Christian gathering and can serve several other purposes.

Strong points:

  • Great composition. The song was composed in a way that enhanced the message of the song. The choice of chords and their arrangement was good.
  • Great production. It’s true that that the song was beautifully composed, but the production made the composition more appealing. The production of this song was quite good. Considering the message of the song, I must commend the choice of instruments used in this production. They enhance the emotion of the song. And they were skillfully played too. Also, the mix was good. There was clarity and balance in the mix.
  • Relevant message. Like I stated at the general overview, it’s a love song to God. The song talks about the loving way in which God relates with believers and in response to that unconditional love, Miracle Paul affirms his love for God, calling Him “odim n’obi” which translates “the one in my heart” or “the one my heart yearns for”.
  • Another good thing about this song is that there was dynamics. And it’s beautiful. You could play the song repeatedly and not get tired of it.

What could have been improved:

  • The chant at the beginning of the song was misleading. It gives you the feeling of a very sad/ sorrowful song. Thankfully, when the instruments were introduced, it changed that feel.
  • The backing vocals lacked emotions. This song is a love song and the words depicted a lot of emotions welling in the heart of the writer. But the backing vocals sounded flat with no emotion at all. They sang it like it meant nothing to them. Personally, I began to think that the song would have been better without them.
  • The point where Miracle Paul spoke in tongues at the end of the song didn’t seem natural. I could argue that it was unnecessary in this song. There are other songs where it would naturally blend with the message of the song, but it didn’t quite sit well in this song.

Conclusion:

I listened to “N’obi” several times before reviewing it. It’s a beautiful song. And the melody sticks quite easily. On a scale of 1- 10, I would give this song a 7/10. You can listen to the song on Deezer. You can also read other song reviews I’ve done here.
